The concept of culture in the corporate world has much in common with the more traditional, ethnic or geographical world view.
Even by looking at the concept of traditions, being only one consideration, you can extrapolate the theme easily for application in the world of corporate.
Instilling traditions or rituals that connect and inspire people are one tool towards helping steer the culture you consciously wish to create it. Better still would be to infuse traditions that connect people whilst simultaneously aligning with the overall vision, mission or values declared. Ideally traditions where people are included in the participation, design, voice or vote.
It’s easy to find great examples of traditions in cultures generally associated with what sometimes seems to be perceived as the holy grail; unique culture. It seems that all too often people associate the ‘fun’ surface stuff, like casual attire or other liberal freedoms, as testament to being part of a unique culture. Be careful. Consider the nice to have soft touches are most effective when underpinned, backed up and refined by efficient processes, regular coaching and ongoing knowledge transference through targeted development programs. If not a fun bells and whistles culture could collapse just as easily as a house of cards.
