Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTi)

Polarity in personalities (opposites attract) is apparently one thing which makes the world go round. It also makes the world go round the twist! At times you’re left wondering if we’re really all from the same planet.

There’s a reason why some people feel compelled to name their car whilst others simply view it as an inanimate object that serves a function of getting point A – B. Conversely there are some people whose microscopically detailed plans down to the finest detail would feel more clinical than fun to individuals driven more to spontaneity.

Irrespective your preferred scientific tool for unraveling the mysteries of behavioral science, a better understanding of type helps individuals and teams improve performance and the quality of communications. 3 of our favorites are either considered or included as part of our programs and coaching.

Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTi)

The MBTi assessment is a psychometric profiling questionnaire designed to measure preferences in how people perceive their world and make decisions.

Theories initially published in 1921 by Carl Jung were later extrapolated and expanded on by Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers in an effort to find pragmatic application, beneficial for everyday life.

The tool explores 4 dichotomies with a preference leaning more towards one over the other.

  • Where you focus your attention – Extroversion Introversion
  • How you prefer to take in information – Sensing or Intuition
  • How you make decisions based on that information – Thinking or Feeling
  • How you deal with the world – Judging or Perceiving

The terms used for each of these dichotomies have technical meanings relatable to Myers Briggs Type Indicator that may differ from how you recognise these terms in everyday.

The MBTI instrument shows some of the highest levels of consistency and reliability of any personality assessment product in market.

DISC “personality” profiling gives you not only an understanding of how you are perceived by others, but it also gives you a language (or set of terms) to discuss your behaviour, communication, style of working and reactions. It is the ultimate ‘mirror on the wall’ that explains what everyone else can see: the surface level of who you are – your behaviour.

DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Compliance) is a complex model made simple by years of research and practice. It identifies behavioural styles that can open your eyes to improving your interactions with others. DISC profiling is used by an estimated 75% of the Fortune 500 because of what it delivers. It continues to be the most popular choice for professional development as well as recruitment and selection.

Whereas behaviour modelling highlights preferred methods of how someone goes into action they don’t explain the underlying reasons as to why; intrinsic motivation.

The WPMOT theory was developed by Eduard Spranger, who observed that people viewed the world and their interactions through six different “attitudes”. Based on the intensity of the “attitudes”, Spranger could determine what motivated and drove a person into action. After extensive research, the WPMOT assessment was developed based on Spranger’s theory. Our attitudes reflect our values, which shape the way we see the world – they are a viewpoint, a mindset or a way of valuing life. As a result, these values motivate us to take action. Therefore, the WPMOT explains why we move into action as well as what motivates us to achieve, sell, manage, connect with customers and more.

The six motivators that the WPMOT instrument measures are:

  • Theoretical: a drive to understand and systemise the truthff1
  • Utilitarian: a drive to get a return on time, money and resources
  •  Aesthetic: a drive for beauty, form and harmony
  • Social: a drive to eliminate hate and conflict
  •  Individualistic: a drive to lead and be different
  •  Traditional: a drive to achieve a higher purpose

Emotional Intelligence

You may hear ’emotional intelligence’ and ‘mindfulness’ significantly ping on the behavioral science and social media radar. Whilst the expression has been in publications and circles for decades the term emotional intelligence became more widely popular and synonymous with publications by Daniel Goleman.

EQ (EI) is the ability to monitor one’s own and/or other people’s emotions to discriminate between different emotions, label them appropriately and ultimately use this information to guide higher awareness thinking and behavior.

The Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i 2.0®) is one of the first scientifically validated and one of the most widely used Emotional Intelligence instruments in the world. It’s importance can help define a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way.
The tool investigates and pulls report overviews on five composite scales;

  • Self Awareness
  • Self Expression
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Decision Making
  • Stress Management
