If the Wright brothers were still alive do you think they’d still be manufacturing or testing basic gliders with moveable rudders if seeking commercial success?

It’s imperative to keep your insights and knowledge up to speed not only to remain credible but also to become a real master at your craft or be seen as a trusted advisor.

Two primary rules to reinforce the need for continued development programs;

#1; Up skilling, is a critical principle towards continued commercial and social success. Which skills? All of them; soft skills, hard skills, technical, intellectual or emotional!

#2; Once the requirement for regular development programs is accepted, the method in which you either learn or leverage facilitation & knowledge transference must also be adaptable.

Here’s a list of some key factors we review each year to help give you direction.

Five Fundamentals For Development Programs;


1 – Choose Development Programs That Deliver Tangible Results.

When things get tough, especially in down turn markets, training or development programs are often one of the first items viewed as surplus to critical business success. (I’ve been approached often enough over the years for input on how to reduce training costs including loss of productivity due to time out of the field.)

Be sure to choose development programs that align to your overall goals .
Choose up skilling programs that can me measured against tangible metrics.

There’s no reason to see development as a cost if the numbers stack up the same way any other investment towards business success is measured.


2 – Only Knowledge Put Into Action Is Powerful

Development programs alone don’t deliver measurable results when the knowledge gained remains as theory, floating in the ether in scribbled note pads or handouts.

Development for its own sake is like a fleeting shiny object lit once for entertaining effect then left alone to simply fizzle out. The heading here is to emphasise that attending development programs is one thing. Knowledge in itself may have potential yet it’s only once knowledge is applied in action it truly becomes powerful.

Make sure you have a follow up plan to drive continuance beyond the boundaries of initial course attendance or facilitation.
For the individual having attended a development program, take responsibility for yourself; don’t be shy to ask for help and support.


3 – Coaching & The Power of Individual Learning Pathways

For the manager who doubles as a coach, be mindful. The hats aren’t naturally always easy to toggle. Wearing one, you may be more inclined to tell and direct, wearing the other means moving to guide or show.

There’s a time to manage or direct. There’s a time to coach.
It’s one reason coaching is seen as an independent skill in itself.

For the would be manager/coach familiarise yourself with method and tools to know the difference.

For the individual pro-actively seeking support, coaching is a little like personal training. Be sure work with a facilitator you feel comfortable with. Then, a little like getting a face tattoo, if you’re going to dive into a coaching program make sure you are fully committed!


4 – Technology Is A Viagra For Human Development

The speed and variety of tech tools available in market play their part; be it e-learning, self-paced, virtual online, live conference calls, recorded archives all of which can be accessed and monitored through a sophisticated LMS or even open online.

Development programs can easily include remote learning via proprietary tools and technologies and we can help give you guidance if it’s required.

Consider how your program will best reach and rengage remote teams just as efficiently as main offices.

The risk with technology in development, or online learning in general, as a method, is the same as use of tech in sales; Technology is an enabler. You can’t rely on it solely to replace the natural energetic drive that skilled facilitation (with or without technologies) enables.

Don’t be afraid of tapping technology as part of your development program. We live in a time where people from every age, generation and culture are connected using it. It’s amazing what you can access remotely or at your fingertips. Queue an easy Segway into final consideration number 5…


5 – Video & Sensory Engagement

If you research You Tube alone, it seems they have over 6 billion hours of video viewed each month, (more than an hour for every person on earth) with 100 hours more uploaded every minute.

Human beings are sensory. They experience their world through their senses. Video linked to development can be a powerful way to engage, in a single swoop, more than half of the 5 tangible senses we are naturally equipped with. Caveat; provided the content and quality drives a powerful enough emotional or provocative response.

Keep videos and articles targeted, on track and time conscious (movie length development videos  are a speciality in their own right).

For the individual, Google seem to be placing a higher priority on content quality in search and optimisation, maybe there’s a clue in there. Entertainment is fantastic and so is stretching your potential.

Make sure you regularly include videos or articles that stimulate your brain in addition to the latest popular trends when searching for something fun to peruse on the commute or over your morning coffee. TED’s an obivious choice, yet there’s a smorgasboard for your brain out there amongst that 6 billion hours plus ever expanding menu.
